Mental Gymnastics by Perhaps Hand

Self-released, April 2023

You might recognize Austin Tally from his old band Wing Dam, an indie rock three-piece that put out albums with the now-defunct Baltimore label Friends Records and toured the country several times with synth pop standouts Future Islands. Since that project ended in 2018, Tally has been working on new material under the Perhaps Hand moniker.

The fifth official Perhaps Hand release, Mental Gymnastics is nine tracks of soft, groovy bedroom pop featuring Tally’s agile guitar work and fragile vocal harmonies. Spare and melancholic, these songs are thoughtfully written, fully performed and recorded by Tally himself. It’s a good listen on an overcast day in early spring.
