Anything for a Weird Life

It’s Not Too Late

This past week, I turned 49. Typing that out reminds me that I am still grappling with the reality of that fact and the passage of time as we all keep trying to beat the clock.

The doomy clouds initially gathered around me this past weekend parted, when, at an underground house show, a friend pointed out in conversation that it is all about perspective.

It’s not too late.

At said underground house show, I not only had a ripping good time seeing Bleach Cubes, The MFC, Gripper (from Philadelphia), and Muscle rock the (literal) house, but I got to witness folks meeting and recognizing each other as fellow travelers for the first time, drawn together by their enthusiasm for the weird life, their giddy joy palpable as they opened up the pit.

It’s not too late.

After huddling over, submitting, and then seeing last week’s column online, I realized there was a hole in the middle of my preview of a packed month. The mighty Tomato Flower will return to Baltimore on Wednesday, April 16th at The Compound with support from Suzanne Doogan, Music Mouse, and Spiral Jetty. I recently had a conversation with Suzanne about the lack of local music press and how my column is a rare opportunity to shout out local folks. She wondered if I felt any pressure to get it right. Yes. Yes, I do.

It’s not too late.

Tonie Joy, Randy Davis, and Steve Strohmeier have formed a band, Deep Essence, and have played two shows so far, one opening for Black Eyes in Philadelphia and one opening for Quattracenta in Baltimore. Tonie and Randy were both around and active when I fell into the scene. If they can keep going, so can I.

It’s not too late.

To briefly cross streams” here, you should totally ask that person you were thinking about asking to the prom. Yes, it might not work out, but taking that risk will lead to a situation where you know as opposed to one where you don’t. If you read my column and this advice applies to you, walk up to me and say macaroni” at the place where we usually see each other. No more needs to be said. Just remember…

It’s not too late.
