April Is The Coolest Month

upcoming Baltimore show showcase

As the poet once said, April is the coolest month!” Or something like that.

And April in the Baltimore music underground is going to be filled to the gills with a cornucopia of events. Below are some highlights.

Tuesday, April 1st sees the increasingly-inaccurately-named Albert and Christian welcome another new member as they open for Aunt Katrina and London’s Still House Plants at The Ottobar. Albert and Christian seek a new name. Can you help them out?

Wednesday, April 2nd brings us another show of note at Wax Atlas, a place that has recently stepped up to reliably provide a full calendar of diverse music events. Stephen Santillian/ Double Spectre shares a bill with 0.1 Grand and P’errigerro.

The recent sudden passing of Susan Alcorn was a shock to many. A memorial will be held on Saturday, April 5th at 2640 Space. More information is available here.

I first saw Brainiac play on a tour with Unwound in April of 1995. 30 years later, the surviving members return to play the Metro Gallery on Wednesday, April 9th with Artificial Go and local openers SLOT.

Friday, April 11th brings the MonarchKitty SUPURRR Show to The Compound, a three-ringed event, beginning with sets from Pearl, Muscle, Tripper, and Limit Break. Check the above listing for more, and check each band’s social media, as many have a busy spring planned.

Current Space is back in the rotation this month for shows and events. Friday, April 25th brings TAKAAT (of Modu Moctar) to town with opening sets by Bruce Willen and Crying Laughing. It is great to see another season of outdoor shows and art openings begin at Current.

Saturday, April 26th is the hometown release show for Jivebomb’s new release Ethereal at Ottobar featuring Jarhead Fertilizer, Cold Mega, Erode, E (Cape Cod), and Balisong, with DJ sets by Pictureplane. Jivebomb’s last live Ottobar appearance sold out, so tickets in advance may be a worthwhile move.

These and many other worthwhile shows will be occupying my time and attention in April. I know in my heart I will not make it to all of them, but I will try my best to attend as many as I possibly can. In April, when it rains, it pours. If I didn’t mention your show, please know I see you and appreciate what you are doing.
