melding the increasing horror of social media and film criticism, letterboxd has found itself as the premiere marketing arm for the industry. new releases will find users with tens of thousands of followers making one-liners of how a certain actress ate or how the new a24 or neon releases break new ground. claims that hold no water but allow access to attend screenings or even bump shoulders with filmmakers and actors they stan. someone has to hold the mic in those “what are your top 4” videos (usually the type who dreams to visit the criterion closet truck)
while many use the site to clout-chase and taste-make, others find a sense of community among a different sect of cinephilia: the fans of cheap tubi-core horror flicks, art gallery ephemera and other fare TMDb mods often will remove from its database (such self-produced documentaries, youtube videos, and concert films). here we find the likes of scumbalina, sally jane black and nathaxnne, writers with a distinct taste and unique styles that prompt discussion of the canon’s ideological bent or reevaluation of maligned films (genre fare or otherwise)
a mainstay in this realm is pd187, an anonymous user known for their heavily researched reviews popular for their conspiratorial bent and old internet flare. an art bell fan, ufo nut, and a full moon pictures head, their writing dwells on black highlighter cia documents and schizophrenic wordplay. never shying away from controversy, their review for 1995’s lost highway, connecting david lynch to a string of mysterious deaths, found them kicked from the site before eventually being reinstated.
